2017 Population Estimates

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the nation’s population increased from 323.4 million (July 2016) to 325.7 million (July 2017) — adding 2.3 million new residents. On average, the U.S. population has increased about 0.7 percent per year since 2012 or a 3.7 percent change over the past five years.

Idaho had the fastest rate of growth at 2.2 percent over the past year. Rounding out the list of most rapidly growing states are Nevada (2.0 percent), Utah (1.9 percent), Washington (1.7 percent), Florida (1.6 percent) and Arizona (1.6 percent). Population totals decreased in five states by less than one percent: Hawaii (-0.1 percent), Alaska (-0.2 percent), Illinois (-0.3 percent), West Virginia (-0.7 percent) and Wyoming (-0.9 percent).

The most populous states in the US are California (39.5 million), Texas (28.3), Florida (20.9), New York (19.8), Pennsylvania (12.8) and Illinois (12.8). States with the largest one-year, Julyto-July, population gains were Texas (+399,734), Florida (+327,811), California (+240,177), and Washington (+124,809).

Missouri ranked 18th by population size with 6,113,532 residents. The state gained 22,356 new residents between July 2016 and July 2017. Neighboring Tennessee added 66,580 residents; neighboring Illinois lost about 33,703 residents.

Tennessee and Nebraska had the largest one-year percentage increases among states that surround Missouri: 1.0 and 0.7 percent, respectively. Oklahoma and Kansas had the smallest increases at 0.2 percent.

Missouri County Population

St. Louis County continues to have the largest Missouri population with 996,726 followed by Jackson County (698,895), St. Charles County (395,504), St. Louis City (308,626), and Greene County (289,805). The county with the smallest population in Missouri is Worth County with 2,057 residents.

Jackson County had the largest population increase with 5,780 new residents followed by St. Charles County (4,709), Clay County (4,112), Platte County (2,534) and Greene County (1,924). The largest percent increase was Platte County at 2.6 percent, both Lincoln and Dallas Counties tied at 1.8 percent increases, and Clay and Warren Counties tied at 1.7 percent increases each.
